AI training datasets provider secures series A funding

Series A funding round led by Patamar Capital and Cradle Seed Ventures, the VC arm of Cradle Fund Sdn Bhd incorporated under Malaysia’s Ministry of Finance, was successfully closed by Supahands, a Malaysian startup. Supahands provides datasets to train AI and facilitate machine learning.

Launched in collaboration with Australia’s Investing in Women initiative, Patamar Capital’s applies a gender lens as a part of its investment strategy. Supporting women-led businesses such as Supahands that have an impressive number of women employed as a part of its workforce thus is in sync with its investment strategy.

Supahand’s  co-founder and COO is Susian Yeap and the company also employs part-timers called SupaAgents ot of which 64% are women, to carry out tasks. These tasks include data tagging and image annotation.

Yeap has strong ideologies opposing the conventional norm of Asian culture which she believes expects women to become stay- at- home mothers once they have children, while men go out for work. According to her, they respect tradition but they also want to give women the opportunity to support their families financially in their own time. The company has defied the presumptuous ideas about tech companies, as it is a female- led company which employees a majority of female employees too.

Patamar Capital partner Shuyin Tang, and senior advisor Nor Azah Razali will be the latest inclusion to Supahand’s board which already includes Chan Chee Seng, Associate Professor at University Malaya’s Department of Artificial Intelligence, Bruno Gagliardo, Ph.D., Global Director of Data Analytics at iflix, Pedro Sttau, Chief of Information at iCar Asia and Izwan Ismail, an Expert Associate Partner at McKinsey and Company. Supahands is aiming to expand in the APAC region post the newly added capital. Moreover, in order to ensure diversity in their aggregated data, the company has plans to hire SupaAgents from every SEA country with local cultures and legislative differences
